First Report of the New Rio Grande River Study
In the continuation of the Rio Grande river study
conducted by the University of Montana's
fisheries department, this season we welcome another group of researchers.
This time, local biologists who are studying our very special Sea Run Brown
Trout to see how, for instance, it has become the most prevalent fish in the
Rio Grande, even though it is not native here.
The biologists have already (in one week!) discovered great news for Nervous
Waters and all anglers:
On January
20, 2012 we began our fieldwork in the Rio Grande, Tierra del
Fuego. Currently (January 28, 1 week later) anglers
have captured 15 individuals of anadromous brown
trout, and 1 resident brown trout, who were placed in
special cages.
Of these,
8 were tagged and released in good
condition after 48 hours of observation, and 4 more were alive after 12
hours in the cages. So, the mortality was 0%, although these data are preliminary.
