Bill Farnum and nine friends traveled to Bair’s Lodge in South Andros for a Casting4ACure trip. Casting4ACure is a fund-raising event to aid in the search for a cure for Rett Syndrome, a neurodevelopment disorder found almost exclusively in young girls.

Here is Bill’s Story.

It was a rainy day in December 2007 when Beth and Bill Farnum learned their daughter, Ella, had Rett Syndrome.

Within months, Bill figured out how to combine his newest passion, curing Rett Syndrome, with his oldest one, fishing. His idea was to organize a small fly fishing trip for a few friends and ask for donations in return.

Bill soon realized he needed a partner to pull off such a feat. This partner had to be someone who could get equally as excited about a fundraising adventure. Enter Jim Copeland, Bill’s long-time fishing buddy. Jim jumped on board and together they organized the perfect outing. They would take a handful of friends and head to Steamboat Springs for a weekend filled with fishing, poker, and lots of good laughs.

There was just one problem. This idea was too good for just a handful of friends. Everyone who heard about the trip wanted in. And because these are the last guys to turn down a party, Bill and Jim’s vision has since turned into a series of events featuring some of the best fly fishing locations in the West, corporate sponsors, live music and endless camaraderie. Over 200 people have participated in past C4C events, coming from all over the US, as well as internationally from Canada and Argentina. But despite all the growth and good times, the ultimate goal remains crystal clear: Casting4ACure is raising awareness around this tragic disorder.

Over the last five years, Casting4ACure has grown into a multi-faceted, non-profit organization that raises critical funds for research and to support families affected by Rett Syndrome. Since its inception, Castinf4ACure has raised over $250,000 for Rett Syndrome research and family support.

Bill and his friends were blessed with tremendous weather, and a lot of fish.

What a day! Lost track of how many fish we landed with half a dozen monsters over 6lbs. Highlight of the day was watching Win Tuttle lose his biggest bonefish of his life while trying to clear the line -double digits for certain and probably over 12lbs. Great winter fishing continues -cool water, light wind and warm days make for some awesome fishing in Abaco.

Dateline: Lower Rio Grande..Villa Maria Lodge 07 February, 2012

7 anglers, One day, 50 trout.

The biggest? It weighed 23 pounds. But there was a 21 as well. And two 20 pounders, and two 19 pounders, and…two 18 pounders.

That’s why you travel 4000 miles to the Rio Grande, for big, big sea trout trout, and lots of them. Enough said.

On TV we always see in the romantic comedies the good guy ending up with the pretty girl. When it comes to fishing, the angler expects to end the week with the biggest and best looking fish… We are not …

On TV we always see in the romantic comedies the good guy ending up with the pretty girl. When it comes to fishing, the angler expects to end the week with the biggest and best looking fish… We are not in a movie at Pira Lodge but this week we had our “love story” or something very near to that.

It started with the arrival of our first group of six people of the season. They were young, inexperienced but ready and eager for the Dorado and they came with a lot of expectations.

The beginning of this February the weather was perfect, not very hot and mostly cloudy. The marsh was low and quiet. The fishing had been very good, landing more than 15 fish per day per boat so far.

One afternoon I was guiding the main character of my story and his wife. In this movie premier, the nice guy, instead of getting the girl, gets the good fish.

Anyway I don’t want to ruin the end of this thriller!

The afternoon was quiet and without any wind, and it was one of those times when it is a pleasure to be guiding. We were at the headwater of the Corrientes River, in a creek we call the North Channel. After catching…sorry, fishing a couple of nice Dorados between 3 and 5 lbs we ended up in a nice bend of the river. The client was casting into the other bank of the creek and swinging the fly downstream.

That was the first contact with the fish.

The hooking was perfect with a strip set, without lifting the rod. That’s the moment when you feel that the angler is going to succeed.

The fish made her first jump and we noticed it was bigger than the others. Our angler was very happy and of course trying to stop the fish from getting away… you see big fish are just like the best girls you don’t want to loose them. After a battle of flirting with the fish, finally she surrendered to the fisherman. The fish weighted 10 and a half pounds, and after some pictures, we put back the beautiful blond into the water. So, at the end of the day we were all happy and celebrating a wonderful stay at Pira Lodge… Just like in the movies….!

So now we are waiting for our next film to be produced. If you come to Pira you could be the next main character!

The first stage of the Rio Grande River Study ended on the 5th of February. The local group of biologists caught less fish than hoped but learned some great news for both Nervous Waters and anglers worldwide!

On the 5^th fo February, the local team of biologists finished their first stage of their study of the Sea Run Brown Trout in the Rio Grande.

Speaking to the scientists they have all very much enjoyed their time on the Rio Grande and their study has already been extremely useful.

Although only 35 fish were landed and then put in the special cages that we had set up. After 48 hours we are delighted to say that everyone of the fish were released in perfect condition, implying the mortality rate is 0%.

Now the biologists have stressed that with only 35 fish landed one cannot fully draw conclusion, however they also said that this study is already showing great results for not just Nervous Waters but any anglers on the Rio Grande. Great news!
