RIO GRANDE WINTER REPORT
KauTapen and Villa Maria Lodge
We have had quite a wet winter with more snow and rain than average, so a high river is expected for the beginning of the season. We are also expecting that the higher water level will bring the bigger fish earlier. + info

DORADO SEASON – COMING SOON!

Pira Lodge, Iberá Marshlands, Argentina

The past two seasons on the Ibera Marshland at Pira Lodge have been brimming with bright spots. During 2008 the Marsh suffered a difficult drought that impacted the fishery during 2009 and 2010. But by the end of 2009 we were catching good numbers of fish—but smaller ones—due to an en masse spawn prompted by heavy rains late in the year.

The 2010 season produced fantastic fishing in terms of numbers, but again not ideal as far as fish size. By 2011 we were witnessing great numbers, as well the return of bigger fish. Local dorado populations had been busy bulking up, producing some nice 10-pounders. The real rebound started last season with a fresh surge of fish in 8- to 15-pound class, and average size fish in the 3- to 5-pound range.

Recent scouting missions tell us that this season will be the best in many years, both in terms of numbers and average size. During the first days of October we caught plenty of fish weighing 4 to 10 pounds, but also some hefty specimens in the 12- to 16-pound range. We've seen loads of fish in the area. And to make things better, we had heavy rains all through October that raised the level of the marsh by about three feet. This allows us to target all three sections that make Pirá such a special destination:

- The Marsh
- River Headwaters
- The River itself

Book now to experience freshwater dorado fishing at its finest. Spaces are filling fast so please do not hesitate to contact us or your agent to find out more about Pira!

Abaco & Bair's LODGE

Oliver White, our partner in the Bahamas, has this to say about fall fishing:
"Fishing starts heating up in late September and stays great through the fall. The bonefish haven't seen an angler for months, if ever, and long days and good light means lots of shots at tailing fish. Also, these are great months to capitalize on the diversity our lodges offer. Juvenile tarpon are more common, and permit seem to show themselves a little more. As long as there aren't any named storms hanging around, the weather is very pleasant and conductive to fly fishing."

This season Abaco lodge added a new reason for anglers to choose our lodge: Chico Fernández, fly fishing legend, will be hosting a trip from Dec 1-6.

In other important news, we have new managers at Abaco Lodge. Anne and Ken Perkinson will be your new hosts this season:

Anne and Ken are from Charleston, SC, where Ken has spent the past eleven years operating a successful home improvement business and Anne has enjoyed exploring career opportunities including resort hospitality, product and service sales, and retail management. They are both thrilled to join Oliver White and the Nervous Waters team and are looking forward to the great adventures ahead at Abaco Lodge.

Bair's Lodge managers, Ray and Ann, tell us that each season at South Andros means a new Bahamian Adventure. Here is the story of how they were welcomed this season:

"As Ann and I prepared to travel back to Bair's Lodge in South Andros, Bahamas, we discussed our strategies for preparing the lodge after four months of closure for the summer. We knew that it would require cleaning the house from top to bottom on the inside, as well as cleaning and painting the exterior. We also knew there would be a fair amount of yard work. This is standard procedure.

But every year we return is an "Adventure", and I say this tongue-in-cheek, because there is always something new. This year we found the house as expected, but the yard was a different story. About six weeks before we arrived, a tropical storm blew through the islands, and South Andros was not spared. The yard was littered with palm fronds, branches, seaweed, and trash that had blown in from the sea. We also lost a palm tree that fell and managed to miss the house.¨

"Four young Bahamian men and three days later, all was in order. Then we were back in the normal business of prepping the lodge for guests. We anticipate a good season with many returning guests/friends, as well new faces. Even though we will have a few thundershowers through the fall, we expect the fishing to be good, because the bonefish haven't seen any angling pressure for nearly five months. We are fortunate to have all of our staff and fishing guides back with us and ready for a great year."

If you've never been to Bair's Lodge on South Andros, you owe it to yourself to make the visit.

RIO GRANDE WINTER REPORT

Last season started with similar conditions and the fishing remained fantastic all throughout the 4 months in which our lodges in the Rio Grande are opened. The biggest fish landed was a huge 30-pound male trout. Will some lucky angler break this record during the coming season? We hope so!

The new season starts in 2 months and we are finishing all the maintenance work on our lodges, roads, and accesses. This is an annual necessity in order to assure that when our first clients arrive, they will find everything in perfect order. No detail is overlooked at our lodges on the Rio Grande.

In addition, we are in the process of finalizing our staff line-ups. We hope that you will see most of the same faces again. And as for those who will be working with us for the first time, training has commenced.

Finally, we are entering the sixth year of our Rio Grande Sea Trout Study. The team of local biologists—who took over research after the University of Montana study—have embarked on a new two-year phase to estimate mortality rates stemming from catch-and-release fishing. Up to now, the study has turned up some amazing data:

85,000. The estimated RUN SIZE IN 2008.

9+LBS. The average weight of Rio Grande trout. One in five exceeds 15 lbs . One in fifty tips 30 pounds.

14-21%. How much greater in weight Rio Grande trout are than Atlantic Salmon of the same length.

12 YEARS. The age some of the returning trout. The overall count of returning trout remains constant.

The Rio Grande the most important river in Tierra del Fuego, the world's premier sea-run brown trout fishery.. Nowhere else will you find fish of this size in greater numbers. Many years of careful management have fostered a healthy and sustainable population of sea-run browns, whose mortality appears little affected by catch-and-release fly fishing.

However, the continued health of this rare and remarkable resource relies on constant vigilance. The continuing study measures post-release mortality. Additionally, the study employs sophisticated radio telemetry and specialized containment cages to track and monitor individual specimens. The data collected will be invaluable in protecting and preserving this angling treasure. If you are interested in donating funds for the project, please let us know.
