SEA-TROUT SEASON IN FULL SWING

VILLA MARIA LODGE

We started the season with great expectations, a solid team of guides, and managers and staff anxiously awaiting the first influx of anglers.

Water levels were unusually high for the early season. And the first anglers arrived ready for a challenge, with big and fresh sea trout on the agenda. As the river dropped into form the fishing got better and better.

Now entering our fourth week, the river is in perfect shape as far as levels and water clarity. Pools are loaded with fish but water temperature is a bit higher than the ideal, making for the best fishing during the last hours of the day. And we can still go to bed with a smile.

So far we've landed 264 sea trout and lost more than 90. The average weight is 12 pounds, which is a great size. We've landed approximately 40 fish weighing more than 15 pounds and four over 20 pounds. The biggest was a female, weighing 24 pounds.
There is a new run arriving now which, combined with the current low water, promises more epic fishing.

KAU TAPEN LODGE

We opened the season at Kau Tapen with high water levels due to rain. Despite the early deluge, water temps have ranged from 9º to 13º C since the beginning—ideal for sea-run flyfishing. It's been challenging at times, but fresh fish are entering the river and fishing has been good.

Over the past week river conditions started out ideally. However, Saturday and Sunday were hot, warming the water to unfavorable temps for fishing. On Monday normal conditions prevailed, with wind, cooler weather, and optimum water temps of 11 to 13° C. Fish were everywhere—both on the upper and lower beats. They jumped, rolled, and boiled, with several caught per rod/per day and impressive totals for such a small group. Guests also successfully experimented with lighter rigs and small flies.

Most of the fish were ocean-fresh and, more than anything, full of adrenaline. We were surprised to see many of our medium-size fish (7 to 14 pounds) fighting like super-charged 20 pounders. Strong takes and surface boils and slashes.

The moon will be full this week, which means big tides and more fresh, battle-ready fish. We will be there to catch them and look forward to having you at Kau Tapen's this season.

FUTA & PIRA- MORE THAN GREAT FISHING

FUTA LODGE

December rains meant high water and great fishing to start the season. During January, the weather cleared and summer arrived. Water levels were still high but clarity improved and we fished bigger flies than normal—streamers and big foam dries—to some very aggressive browns.

Now that the river has subsided we’ve switched to lighter tackle to target the river’s famous midge hatch. Sight-fishing for 18- to 20-inch bows with #20 adult midges is great sport. Browns are on the take, as well, providing a great mix while float through the raw Andean landscape.

Last week the fishing was particularly epic. Big browns and sight-casting to 18-inch sipping rainbows. Our clients averaged 20 fish a day and missed (or lost) at least as many. They even landed two the morning before they left.

But Futa is not all about fishing. It has much more to give: secluded cabins promise breathtaking views of the mountains and river. For those who don’t fish: horseback riding, river rafting, and trekking are only some of the many activities our non-angling guests enjoy.

PIRA LODGE

Weather and river conditions have fluctuated since the season began. We've had great days and slow days. The good news is that the heavy pre-season rains have filled the marshes and river with fresh water. We coped with quiet days. But as expected, the dorado adapted to their new conditions and woke up hungry.

Water levels are still relatively high. As you may know, Pira lodge has three very different fishing environments: the Corrientes River, the marshes, and the Headquarters. Right now, we're seeing the best results in the river.

With no rain in the forecast, water should start dropping. In the coming days expectations for great fishing remain high!

BAHAMAS – Fall Fishing Reports

FALL AT ABACO

Just two weeks after a solid start to our fall fishing season, Hurricane Sandy blew in and wreaked havoc on the Marls, which had been producing good fishing. Fast and furious, she pushed water out of the Marls leaving us dry on the front end, only to flood us with the return of winds and an incoming tide. After all was said and done, the Marls looked more like chocolate milk than the pristine, clear waters we're used to. It took about a week for the fishery to recover enough to produce decent numbers again.

Interestingly enough, guests found larger bonefish than usual following the storm. Many anglers boated caught their biggest bones soon after Sandy left us. Although some of our precious bonefish were lost during the storm, the Marls showed great resiliency and returned to form after a brief recovery period.

The last couple of weeks of the season produced several bones in the 6 to 10 pound range. Guest Scott W. landed his largest bonefish ever and scored a 30 bonefish to the boat day! Barracuda in the 2 to 5 foot range created exciting moments for anglers seeking action with a little more bite! Nathan M. successfully landed the biggest 'cuda of the season, measuring in at an impressive 4 feet.

With the exception of gusty winds on the front and back ends of Hurricane Sandy, we've enjoyed relatively mild weather this season, with the occasional gusty day and a few scattered rain showers. For the most part, weather has lent itself to successful fishing weeks for our guests. We look forward to hosting new guests and welcoming back good friends, old and new, as we head toward spring 2013.

FALL AT BAIR´S

Just before the fall season at Bair's got under way, Hurricane Sandy skirted South Andros. It tracked about fifty miles to our east and brought high winds, lots of rain, and thunder and lightning. For about five days, it was totally unfishable.

On about the fifth day after the storm moved north, in its wake, we had two weeks of brilliant weather. Each day we were greeted by a beautiful sunrise, clear skies, and low winds—the perfect formula for great bonefishing. And the fishing was fantastic. Lots of fish were caught, including several bigger fish in the 5 to 10 pound range.

By mid-November, fall weather returned to normal. The pattern involves three days where you can see a storm coming. Three days the storm will be here. Then for the next three days you can see the storm departing. And then for three days it will be beautiful. And then it starts all over again.

The good news about the fall weather pattern is that all days offer good fishing—except during the three days of the storm.

All the way from mid-November to mid-December the fishing was very good, with good numbers and lot of bigger fish caught.

Fall fishing can be great. This fall did not disappoint.

FLY-FISHING SHOWS

We started with Somerset, NJ in January, which was a huge success. Oliver White and Martín Carranza represented the team and had the chance to talk fishing with many passionate anglers. It was also a great opportunity to strike new deals with some of the best brands in the business. In addition, we gave a presentation on Bonefishing in the Bahamas, while Martin highlighted Chime lodge—our latest Patagonia acquisition.

Because we're based in Argentina, and many of our relations are conducted via email, fishing shows are the perfect vehicle for valuable face-time with our clients. And the Somerset show was no exception. We enjoyed it immensely.

For those of you attending upcoming shows, please don't hesitate to stop by and say hi. We'd love to meet you.

Here is our agenda:

Winston-Salem, NC February 9, 10 at Benton Convention Center
Lynnwood, WA (Seattle) February 16, 17 at Lynnwood Convention Center
Pleasanton, CA February 22, 23, 24 at Alameda County Fairgrounds
Lancaster, Pennsylvania March 2, 3 at Lancaster County Convention Center
