What a Run! 30 years of Excellence

In 2014 Kau Tapen Lodge will celebrate its 30th Anniversary. Not only was Kau Tapen the first Nervous Waters lodge, but it was also the first lodge on the Río Grande and the first to implement catch and release conservation measures for sea run brown trout.
We’re proud of these achievements and we know this milestone deserves to be celebrated in a way that includes all of you who helped elevate Kau Tapen to the top.

We are so excited for the 30 year anniversary of Kau Tapen, that we are doing a number of special things, including 30th anniversary theme offerings and gifts for the clients. But one gift we are going to give…is a special gift to the planet, by making Kau Tapen a GREEN lodge. Recently we brought two university professors to the lodge, both experts in sustainability; and they have designed a system to take advantage of Tierra del Fuego's very favorable climate conditions (lots of wind and lots of sun) to power the building by using wind generators and solar panels to power virtually all of the lodge systems. We will be one of the first sporting lodges to be completely GREEN.

Of course we are happy that this change will benefit the environment, but we are also happy to tell you that in the past, we were forced to turn our generator off at night and periodically for maintenance. This sometimes made life difficult for our clients, who had to walk the halls with flashlights or candles. With our new system, we'll be able to offer 24 hour hour power, including internet, light, heat, and better hot water heating. It will be a terrific benefit to offer this to our anglers, and as far as we see it, it is a great benefit for everyone which will enhance your comfort and overall lodge experience.

Last—but not least—please take a second to read the story of how it all started, 30 years ago, written by the Doug Larsen, an asset to our company who walked with us all the way from the very beginning. We think you’ll enjoy the story. Click here.

There are only a few spots left for this special season. Contact us TODAY to book yours and join the party!

And remember, in honor of our 30th anniversary at Kau Tapen, those who score a 30-pound trout, the next stay is on us!

Fish the Best of 2 Countries

Futa and Chime lodges make for a perfect fishing equation, allowing you to experience the best trout fishing that Argentina and Chile have to offer in just one trip. Chime lodge was added to the Nervous Waters portfolio after years of searching for a lodge surrounded by Patagonia’s legendary trout waters. What sets it apart is unprecedented access to more than 6 trophy trout rivers and 10 lakes. Chime is ideally located on the “boca” of the Chimehuin with access to them all, guaranteeing variety and the opportunity to customize your daily fishing itineraries.

At Chime you’ll also find friendly and professional guides who know the waters like no one else, as well as a house staff who look after every single detail so that your focus remains on the exceptional fishing.

We know that anglers appreciate variety and now we’re offering a program that combines the very best trout fishing of two countries in one trip. You will enjoy fishing in two completely different environments: Argentina’s lake-district via Chime lodge and Chile’s lush Futaleufu Valley, with Futa Lodge across the Andes Range. Species include brown, rainbow, brook trout, and landlocked salmon. And… the program offers plenty of wading and floating opportunities, plus horseback expeditions to the best fisheries—depending on your fishing preferences.

The GOLD Rush

For many years the golden dorado or “River Tiger,” one of Latin America’s most exciting game fish, was kept a secret in its heartland. But as intrepid anglers began getting to know this aggressive and spectacular fish, word spread and it quickly rocketed to the top of the anglers’ wish lists.

Up until now Pira represented the ultimate dorado fishing lodge, catering to anglers across the globe. It offers untold acres of unpressured waters in the Iberá marshlands, where hungry dorado await good casts and those looking for challenges and rewards.

With the debut of our newest lodge, Alto Paraná, the adventure has expanded and, together with Pirá, we’re now proud to offer the most complete and exciting dorado program on the planet. Anglers will thrive on fishing across varied environments and experience all facets of dorado behavior—from sight-casting in clear, skinny water to river and delta scenarios, and more.

The new lodge is strategically located on the upper and clearest section of the legendary Paraná River. Being the main artery in the basin, supersized dorado are a possibility anytime. To add more variety, you’ll also have shots at pacú and pira pita; two of the strongest freshwater species in the world that bring dry-fly action onto the menu.

The close proximity of Pira and Alto Paraná makes for a perfect, one-of-a-kind combination trip. Plus, you’ll be just one hour from the most breathtaking falls in South America: THE IGUAZÚ FALLS—a not-to-be-missed sight.

Be one of the pioneering anglers to combine these two unique dorado destinations today.

Bair’s Lodge

Bair’s Lodge said goodbye to its last clients of the season in May, a month that typically translates to BIG FISH at South Andros. Thankfully, the spring conditions cooperated: Temperatures warmed into the blissful 80-degree range. Skies cleared, allowing the solar-effect to warm the waters of the flats. And, for the most part, winds were moderate.

With this spectacular close to the season, we’re anxious to begin a new one. At the lodge, longtime Bair’s managers Ray and Ann have recently retired—although they plan to stay close and even host selected groups throughout the season. At the same time, we’re excited to introduce you to our new managers, who we’re sure you’ll also love.

MEET ERIC AND ANGELA VAN VELSEN

After working in the fly-fishing industry for a combined 15 years, Eric Van Velzen and Angela Brennan are excited to be welcoming guests from around the world at Bair’s Lodge on wild South Andros. With expertise in guiding, food preparation, hosting, and logistical planning in various environs, Angela and Eric know first hand what goes into a successful fly-fishing operation. Their mantra is to provide attentive services, exceed the expectations of fellow anglers, while emphasizing the value of the fishery, ecosystem, and local resources.

Abaco Lodge
By Ken and Anne Perkinson

Abaco closed its doors back in July. The weather was crazy and so were the numbers of bonefish caught! The Marls produced a lot of large fish this year with many bones weighing more than 8 pounds. One group of anglers actually landed close to 150 fish in a short 4-day span, and there were plenty of double-digit days to be had by anglers.

This year also included a few tarpon opportunities and, better yet, had some great permit hookups! We always enjoy the many sightings and opportunities to go after barracuda and sharks and this season was no exception. For instance, we’ll all remember the 10-foot bull shark that our longtime guide, Marty Sawyer, encountered in the skinny waters of the Marls. Another highlight was our last group of the season, a novice trio from the UK, which managed to land 54 bonefish following a brief tutorial.

We want to thank all of our lodge guests for making this a great season at Abaco Lodge. And we’re looking forward to another adventure beginning in October 2013!! Wishing you tight lines and great wines…
Anne and Ken Perkinson, Abaco Lodge Managers
