Pira Lodge, off to a flying start

Last week we had our first double digit fish of the season at Pira Lodge. As Alfonso, one of our guides, told me later, that morning had been stormy, with thunders and lightning. There were two clients at that Lodge, Sam and Dave, and they both decided to wait for the storm to pass by before going to fish.

It was only then that they headed to the river with Alfonso. The action began as soon as they started casting, with a couple of 4 pounders landed. In order to achieve better results, they fished with sinking lines, dragging the fly through the bottom expecting to hook the plug of the river.

The Marshes are in great shape with fish between 4 to 12 lbs purposing and swimming in schools. So I’m telling you… They are here, and we recommend you don’t miss the action!

BLACK FLY + SCHOONER BAY
More than just a new lodge…

The Black Fly / Nervous Water merge is about two stories that include interesting characters, great fishing, and the dreams of creating another special place. For years now Fernando has been building the NW brand as a first class experience for all who stay at the lodges. It is this shared vision of excellence in service, accommodation, and fishing that make for great lodges but it is always the people that bring life to any adventure. Oliver White and Clint Kemp shared a similar dream of building exceptional lodges on Abaco and both started at almost the same time. As fate would have it competitors became friends and the talk of working together and combining strengths seemed to be the inevitable and logical next step.

For many that are unfamiliar with the Florida Salt Water fly fishing culture, Black Fly may conjure up images of a nasty biting fly, but if you have spent any time in the fraternity of those who chase Poons, Perms, and gray ghosts you probably have seen the Black fly logo. Vaughn Cochran long time Key West guide and prolific Salt Water artist created the Black Fly logo as a lifestyle statement to capture all the beauty, adventure and spirit that is Salt Water Fly Fishing. This simple image has become iconic to all things that make the salt water fly fishing experience unique in fishing and life in general. This partnership of great people combined with great guides, trophy fishing and a new town make special conditions for something very good to happen.

The Black Fly Lodge will be the centerpiece of a new harbor side town in South Abaco called Schooner Bay. In the tradition of the legendary fishing clubs of the Bahamas, the Black Fly Lodge will sit at the harbors edge and will host old friends, new relationships will be discovered, epic tales told and life long memories made. In the spirit of the old Bahamas the Black Fly lodge will be an intimate two story veranda house with cozy living room bar and open family style kitchen and dining room on the first floor and eight bedroom suits that open on to the second floor veranda. Black Fly Lodge will be incorporated into the new town of Schooner Bay and guest will enjoy the beauty and community of the surrounding place.

The fishing in South Abaco has been the stuff of legend for years and now a new chapter is going to be written in this book, we look forward to having you come and help us write it.

RIO GRANDE – RIVER REPORT
Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

We have had a very wet winter with more snow and rain than average so a high river is expected for the beginning of the season, but we are also expecting that the higher water level will bring the bigger fish earlier.

We are almost there. The new season will start in less than 2 months and we are finishing all the maintenance work on our lodges, roads and accesses which is necessary to do every season in order to make sure that by the time our first clients arrive, they will be surprised with the perfect shape in which they will find absolutely everything. As you may already know, at our lodges in the Rio Grande, no detail is overlooked.

On the other hand, we have our team of guides and managers ready to start a new season. And for those who will be working with us for the first time, the training has already started.

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to some of the people who will make your stay unforgettable with their friendliness and knowledge.

JEAN BAPTISTE VIDAL
Kau Tapen Lodge Manager

Jean Baptiste Vidal was born in Versailles, France, in 1976. He studied environmental studies in High School and soon after graduating he started working in Freshwaters Conservation in Finistère, France, where he acquired all his knowledge about rivers and lakes preservation, the starting point of his interest in promoting Sport Fishing. Since that moment, Jean Baptiste has fished extensively across North America and in many other parts of the world. In 2006 he started his relationship with Nervous Waters by guiding at Pira, in the Iberá Marshlands, Argentina. In 2007 he went down to Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego as Sea- Run Brown trout fishing guide and was soon after promoted to fishing manager of Toon Ken Lodge where he spent two seasons before taking up the head guide position at Kau Tapen Lodge for two more years, being this season the third in a row.

SEAN BLAINE
Villa María Lodge Manager

Sean was born and raised on Twin Lakes, a small lake in Northern Idaho. This led to a childhood spent on the water pursuing a wide variety of fish, from steelhead and largemouth bass to the diminutive sunfish. After graduating from Idaho State University and serving four years with the 2nd Ranger Battalion, he moved to Bozeman, MT in the Spring of 2000 and started his professional fly fishing career. While guiding and working at a local fly shop, Sean found the time to earn a second degree from Montana State University in the Spring of 2005.

Fishing, particularly fly fishing, has always been a constant in Sean’s life; so, the move to Bozeman, MT and complete emersion into the world of professional fly fishing was a natural fit. Sean spends an average of 200-250 days a year on the water, taking full advantage of Montana’s legendary waters. He is passionate about exploring new fisheries and sharing the joy of discovering new experiences with his clients. Sean is the consummate professional and brings a lifetime worth of accumulated knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm to each day on the water. He looks forward to providing his clients with a unique and fruitful experience in Argentina.

NICOLAS CZERWINSKI
Bella Vista Lodge Manager

Nicolás Czerwinski was born in Argentina 31 years ago. His passion for fly fishing has stayed untouched for more than half of his life as he took up guiding in the Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego, as an afficionate when he was only 14 years old. It was actually his father who was the former guide and Nicolas was his “Caddy”. Nicolas hasn’t stopped fly fishing ever since. He fished almost every river in the Patagonia testing different techniques and acquiring, little by little, a wide depth of knowledge in different species and in the most varied rivers. Now, with 31 years old, he can say that Sea Run Brown Trout is his very favourite specie to fish with a double handed rod. “I enjoy casting to sea-runs as much as landing them!”, says Nicolas with a broad smile on his face. “I’m really excited about starting to work as a fishing guide with Nervous Waters. I know the high standards they are used to and I’m confident that this will be a memorable season, both for me as a guide and for the anglers that come to Bella Vista Lodge.”

FUTA LODGE
The perfect place

The fishing at Futa Lodge is some of the purest wild fly-fishing for rainbows and browns anywhere in the world. Each and every trout that you catch is a perfect representation of its specie.

The Futaleufu is a river that has a multitude of different types of water and styles of fishing. One minute your guide will be rowing you down fase stretches where you’ll fish a streamer to overhanging trees to tempt big browns from their hiding places and the next you’ll be fishing from the bank having stalked a wary pod of rainbows as they sip tiny dry flies from the surface.

For non angling partners or even for those anglers who would also like to make the most of the amazing landscape of this section of the Chilean Patagonia, there are many activities available. For a relaxing afternoon spent near the lodge, hiking and mountain biking are great options with many trails to take. There is also a wood fired hot tub that will soothe any sore muscles.

Horseback riding is a popular activity for all ages, with several horses on the property it’s no problem to take a group of five on a full day adventure. A great trail takes you to Don Benny's farm who has many different farm animals like sheep to make rugs, hats, sweaters and gloves. Fresh cheese is made from the dairy cow’s milk and fresh eggs are always on supply. All of these wonderful local products are used by the chef at the Futa Lodge to delight your taste buds.

For those that are interested in more adventure but still need to appeal to the whole group of non anglers, sit-on-top kayaks are a spectacular adventure with plenty of opportunity to take photos of the gorgeous surroundings. Hard plastic sit-on-top or sea kayaks, singles or doubles, will be waiting for you at the beach of the beautiful Espolon Lake. On the perfect day, the lake is gorgeous for swimming and rock jumping. It's a glacial fed lake with views of beautiful beaches, waterfalls and mountain peaks.

Another type of kayak is an inflatable sit-on-top kayak called a duckie. It's used to float down the Espolon River, consisting mostly of class I and II rapids, maneuvering around the rocks and through the rapids is high energy entertainment.

For the most adventurous guest, white water rafting down the Futaleufu River is extremely fun. Class IV and V rapids (on a I-VI scale) will take your breath away as you float through the Futa valley, soaking up the incredible landscape.

To sum up, Futa Lodge is the perfect place to share an ideal holiday with family or friends of all tastes. Don’t hesitate to contact us or your agent to reserve your spot!
