NEWS FROM THE RIO GRANDE

2014 was another memorable year in Tierra del Fuego. The weather was with us on through most of the season and many record trout were landed, including three monster trout weighing more than 30 pounds.

Off the river--- at Kau Tapen, last season we implemented the second phase of our “GREEN LODGE” project. This includes a system that harnesses Tierra del Fuego's favorable climate conditions (lots of wind and sun) to power the building with wind generators and solar panels.

The results have been even better than expected! We now have power 24/7, which includes heat all night long and a failsafe water heater.

We still have two more phases left to complete before being able to claim that we’re 100% GREEN. But we’re very excited about moving ahead. We’re thrilled about enhancing your comfort and improving the overall lodge experience for all.

In addition to our going green theme, here are a few more upgrades we know you’ll love:

  1. We now have a hot tub at Kau Tapen…get ready to relax after each fishing session!
  2. We have made a 10th room available, letting us offer SINGLE ROOMS to almost every group that visits our lodge.
  3. For 2015, there will be new roads along the Río Menendez. This will shorten ride times and make it easier to get to this fantastic river, further complimenting the Rio Grande experience.

Villa Mariais hardly exempt from our “to do” list. This year we’ve replaced our fishing fleet with new Toyota SW4s. They’re clean, comfortable, safe, and will get you to the fish—no matter the road conditions.

Also at Villa Maria, we have constructed a 6th bathroom-ensuring that all anglers at the lodge will have single rooms, and single ensuite bathroom facilities.

For those who haven’t yet booked sea trout dates yet, be aware that spaces are filling fast. If you are not booked—consider joining one of the group departures with casting expert Simon Gawesworth. He’s a great angler and even greater company.

Simon will be hosting his sea trout fishing clinic at Kau Tapen Lodge during the week of Jan 10 to 17, 2015. If you’d like to join him, the time to secure a spot is now!

ARGENTINA-CHILE TROUT FISHING

Last season marked Chime Lodge’s first year of operation under Nervous Waters management. We chose Chime because its surroundings offer a quintessential Patagonia fly-fishing experience. It really is the perfect hub for accessing all the rivers and lakes that make this region a must-see-and-do.

So the combo proved to be a great success. However, we noticed that the angler-arranged logistics were sometimes complicated. For this upcoming season, our all-inclusive combo covers all the in-between details, so your focus can remain on having a great time while sampling these spectacular waters.

ARGENTINA – CHILE: 9 Days of Epic Trout Fishing:

Futa and Chime lodges, combined, make for an ideal fly-fishing equation—allowing you to cast across borders and fish two renowned destinations in just one trip. Chime Lodge is your gateway to the sprawling trout waters of Northern Patagonia. While Futa Lodge, across the Andes Range, introduces intrepid anglers to the lush Futaleufu Valley. String your rods and target wary browns, high-flying rainbows, beautifully colored brook trout, as well as landlocked salmon in specific areas. You'll wade, explore majestic river miles via fully equipped fly-fishing rafts, and access untouched water by car and/or horseback—depending on your preferences.

All Inclusive Rate: $ 6,645.00 (based on shared room/boat)

Includes: Flight from Buenos Aires to San Martín de los Andes airport, 4 nights and 3 days fishing at CHIME LODGE, transfer from Chime to Bariloche, 1 night at Design Hotel (sgl room), transfer from Bariloche to Futa Lodge, 4 nights and 3 days fishing at FUTA LODGE, Transfer from Futa to Esquel airport, Flight from Esquel to Buenos Aires.

In addition, we’ve replaced last year’s raft fleet with a full battalion of new NRS Otter 140s. These boats are comfortable, nimble on the water, and offer plenty of room for passengers and their gear.

LAST AVAILABLE SPOTS:
Feb 17-21 Futa + Feb 21 Bariloche + Feb 22-26 Chime
Feb 21-25 Futa + Feb 25 Bariloche + Feb 26 - Mar 2 Chime

GOLDEN DORADO ADVENTURES

Alto Paraná opened its doors to anglers for the first time this past season. The program excelled in every way. Not only does Alto Paraná offer the challenge of the most exotic freshwater grand slam—dorado, pacú, and pirá pita—but it can also be combined with with Pirá Lodge. Alto Paraná is only a short drive from Iguazú Falls, for those who want to make the most of their Argentina experience.

Last season we had great dorado fishing as a norm at each of our dorado programs. Pirá Lodge put up strong numbers with good average size fish, while Alto Paraná guests experienced dry-fly fishing for Pira Pita and Pacu, as well as plenty of sight fishing action for large cruising Dorado.

Currently, off-season water conditions are ideal: It's a high-water winter and, if it keeps up through spring, we're expecting more good fishing this summer. With two great options for dorado seekers, now is definitely the time to start planning your tackle-busting dorado trip to Argentina. And for those who want to experience dorado fishing at two world-class destination in one trip, we’ve put together a GOLDEN COMBO for you to check out:

The Combo
3 days fishing at Pirá Lodge, + 3 days fishing at Alto Paraná Lodge. Don't worry about logistics. They're easy and we can arrange everything in advance.

The Price: $5,250

Professional fishing guides, lodging, all meals and drinks, including alcoholic beverages, and all fishing licenses (logistics in between lodges are not included)

THE ICING ON THE CAKE

For those spending a day or two in Buenos Aires, our other new program “Delta Fishing Trips ” is a must do. Not only for Dorado enthusiasts, but for anyone interested in experiencing the natural beauty of this secluded Delta—only minutes from Buenos Aires city.

The program started as a day only option, but many anglers found themselves wishing to stay for another day or two. So we embarked on a project to build a lodge. It will be located on a remote island surrounded by clear waters and great dorado and tararira fishing.

We are now in the construction phase, with plans to be fully operational by February 2015. Capacity is limited to three anglers a night and we’re already taking reservations. If you’re visiting Argentina, skip the downtown hotels--you need to block your spot for this unique experience before they’re all gone!

BONEFISHING PREPARATION FOR FALL

The bonefishing season came to an end less than a month ago. Abaco Lodge managers looked back at it with smiles on their faces and shared with us a few of their favorite moments:

- John Oster’s 20+ lb. permit in October, assisted by Abaco Lodge guide, Town Williams
- Dan Segina’s tarpon in December, assisted by Abaco Lodge guide, Marty Sawyer
- Welcoming Dana Lowe to our substitute guide lineup in March (being one, if not the only, female bonefish guide in the Bahamas)
- Phil McGranaghan’s first ever fish on fly in June (35+lb. tarpon) off the lodge dock, assisted by Abaco Lodge owner, Oliver White

Of course, this is only a small sampling from the plethora of great fishing moments guests have enjoyed this past season.

At both of our Bahamas Lodges, Abaco and Bair´s, we had the pleasure of welcoming back great friends and also enjoyed ushering in a large number of new saltwater anglers—some of whom had fly-fishing experience and others who had never fished at all. Regardless of skill levels, all of them left with a greater understanding of what Bahamas bonefishing is all about.

The diversity of the fishing this year has been simply incredible. The bonefish, on average, were larger than last season and there was a big increase in tarpon and permit sightings. More often than not, guests had at least one opportunity during their stay to observe, chase and/or cast to one of these species. We were excited to hear reports of varying sizes of all species, indicating healthy populations. The Marls is known to be one of the most robust fisheries in the world and after this season’s bounty, we’re more inclined than ever to agree!

Late spring felt more like summer, with hotter than normal temperatures, which soon led to fairly regular thunder showers each late afternoon. The mornings and early evenings were typically calm, lending themselves to great bonefishing. Guests enjoyed a variety of bonefish encounters including the excitement of casting to tailers, throwing to large schools, and going after oceanside smarties.

MEET NEW BAIR'S LODGE MANAGERS:

Doug Meyer

Doug’s long-time passion for fly fishing began in 1976 as a guide working in the western United States. Doug has since worked at many of the famous trout waters including the Snake River, Henry’s Fork, Madison, South Fork of the Snake, Green River, Utah/Wyoming, and Yellowstone Narional Park.

After a thirteen-year hiatus from the fishing community, during which Doug was the Search and Rescue Coordinator for Teton County, Wyoming, he re-entered the business in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in 2014—fishing the intermountain region of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.

Doug has traveled throughout the world. He fished the Bahamas for more than eight years, searching for the best bonefishing and quickly came to realize that South Andros was the place!

Suzanne (Sue) Vigue

Sue is relatively new to the fly-fishing world but enthusiastic about working on her skills. She lived in the New York City area for most of her life working in the corporate technology industry. But she is a passionate outdoor enthusiast, which drove her to move to Jackson, WY, for the skiing, mountains, and quality of life.

Sue and Doug met in Jackson five years ago and share a deep passion for the outdoors. They spend as much of their free time as possible on their local rivers. And they are excited to spend their time this season in beautiful South Andros, Bahamas.
