SEA TROUT SEASON KICK-OFF

And a new Sea Trout season has finally started, and in come the storms! We opened the sesaon at Villa María Lodge with winds up to 65 km/h which were changing direction daily, making the choice of pools to fish a little harder than usual and tested the skills of both single- and double-handed rod fishermen. Fortunately, the water remained clear most days. And using the right techniques guests landed the first silver, fresh sea trout of the season.
For the second week at Villa Maria weather returned to seasonal norms. Showers were sporadic and short and always accompanied by winds from the west. Westerlies are great becausethey do not affect the fishing or carry stormfronts. Instead they tend to bring in drier air from the Andes.

Water has been clear and levels are dropping daily. The good news is that fresh fish are arriving! Most of the sea-runs caught have been spotless, silver, and fresh and they're running fast upstream. Some of the big boys are also showing up. A few 20+pound trout were caught, some were lost, and several over 15 pounds were landed.
During the meantime, Kau Tapen lodge received the first clients on Jan 4th. Mathew Solon, the fishing manager, was excited to see that the fresh fish arrived at exactly the right time and some electric sessions were had during that first week, with three, four and five fish per session being commonplace.

He also reported that the outstanding session of the week most certainly had to go to a Swedish team, Peter and Mikeal, who together with their guide Mini Maxmanage to land an impressive nine fish. Two other anglers, Graham and Iver, received awards at the end of the week for landing the biggest fish, both fish tipping the scales at 19 pounds. Timo with his army of rods, reels and lines had a staggering average of four fish per day and ended the week as the top rod with 28 fish!d Other notable catches included a 17 and a 15 pounder. First time guests Ted and Brelana, under the careful tutelage of our wonderful guide team took to the double handed rod like ducks to water and got their just rewards throughout the week as did Fabrizio who landed 8 fish for just four days fishing.

During the meantime, at Kau Tapen Lodge, we are also pionneering in the "Green" world, in honor of our 30th Anniversary. Before the season started, we brought two university professors to the lodge, both experts in sustainability; and they have designed a system to take advantage of Tierra del Fuego's very favorable climate conditions (lots of wind and lots of sun) to power the building. New wind generators and solar pannels are in place and we're now proud to say that Kau Tapen will be the first sporting lodge to be completely GREEN.
And not only will the planet appreciate the changes! Our guests also seemed very happy to enjoy 24 hour power, including internet, light, and improved hot water heating, which undoubtedly translates to enhanced comfort and a better overall lodge experience.

On another note, we are also excited to see that our lodge will be operating at almost full capacity. If you are still wiling tocome, you better hurry and take the last few spots which will soon be gone. Seems like the excitement of the 30th anniversary, the surprises and gifts that we'll be giving away + the fishing experience has prompted anglers book earlier than ever.

Remember that this seaon we are running a great competition whereby a free trip will be given to anyone who lands a 30 pounder this sesaon, in honor of our 30th anniversary.

BAHAMAS FALL FISHING REPORTS

Abaco Lodge

The 2013 Fall Season at Abaco Lodge got off to the kind of start that fly anglers often dream of. Since reopening in October, we’ve continued the trend of hooking larger than average bonefish; healthy schools cruised the flats on a regular basis and the bones have been eager to hit Enrico Puglisi’s Spawning Shrimp. It’s been an incredible couple of months, with unprecedented sightings and casting opportunities at 20+ lb. permit and 40+ lb. tarpon; especially notable, the 25 lb. permit caught by John Oster and the impressive tarpon that Dan Segina reeled in. This is fast becoming grand slam country.

We experienced a few storm fronts that brought short-lived rain events and periods of stronger than average winds, which made conditions tough for anglers at times, but they persevered and reaped the benefits of their tenacity and endurance. In less than two months, we open for the spring season and if this was a prelude of things to come and I was you, I wouldn’t dare miss one minute of this crazy good action. Only one thing left to do: Grab your gear and get here!

Bair´s Lodge

With the holiday season coming to a close, Bair’s Lodge is wrapping up a wonderful fall. Guests both enjoyed and persisted through a variety of weather here in beautiful South Andros: from clear blue skies and calm waters to frontal systems that challenged even the best anglers. Despite the varied conditions, anglers achieved excellent results, largely due to the expertise of our local guides, as well as bountiful habitat, and an abundance of large bonefish unlike anywhere else.

Some of our most memorable days were spent waking up to stunning sunrises and flat calm seas, where anglers spent their days casting to tailing bonefish that were eager to take well-presented flies.

Returning anglers were again blown away by the abundance of large bonefish prowling the flats of South Andros this season. On some days most of the fish caught would be greater than 4 pounds and fish up to 10 pounds were seen regularly and successfully brought to hand every couple of days. Guests have also increasingly been fishing for large barracudas and even sharks on the flats and around the blue holes of Andros. The results have been epic—producing great options during poor-light conditions.

One of our guides this fall learned the true power of a six-foot lemon shark that dislocated the shoulder of one of our guides. Shark wins. Back to bonefishing. Fly fishing for bonefish at Bair’s Lodge is world class and all of the anglers we hosted are looking forward to their return to see what great results await them next season.

Aside from things such as the weather—which we cannot control—we can control a big part of the guest experience. Bair’s Lodge continued to maintain its reputation as a first class lodge with clean, comfortable, and spacious rooms, warm inviting lounge areas, and excellent cuisine coupled with a charming and professional staff. Each day the guides were lined up and ready to go in top form talking strategy as guests were still enjoying their breakfast discussing the day’s adventure.

We look forward to many more happy adventures in the New Year and our 2014 Bair’s Lodge fishing season. We expect it to be one of the best yet with many returning familiar faces and new guests of all abilities to experience the bonefishing thrill, as well as the culture, and charm that is Bair’s Lodge in South Andros Bahamas. See you in 2014!!

TROUT FISHERMEN, GET READY!

Fishing season in northern Patagonia started in typical fashion, with weather changing from warm, sunny days to cold and windy. Water levels in the rivers were high due to big snowstorms in the Andes, which translated to heavy run-off and good streamer fishing. Dry fly action during the warm spells (blue wing olives and March browns) was also excellent.

Overall, snow accumulation in the Andes has been a bonus, and will sustain cold and constant water flows through the hot summer months. Both our resident and migratory trout should benefit. Currently all the rivers in the area, as per usual during this time of the year, are producing large brown trout. In addition, we've found tons of rainbows staging for the spawn, feeding like crazy to recover body fat. The upper and lower Chimehuin, Malleo, Collon Cura, and Alumine have been productive.

We should also name (but won’t, LOL) three tributaries of the previously mentioned rivers that offer incredible fishing for 12- to 24-inch trout, using 3- and 4-wt. rods and dry flies. We expect to have good water flows in these tribs through the end of the season. Ask your guides at Chime Lodge for more information on these spectacular waters.

Lastly, the upper Chimehuin and its landlocked Atlantic salmon deserve special attention. These hard fighters love the higher and colder waters we’re experiencing right now. A white streamer will do the trick until the warm weather settles in. Once that occurs you’ll be able to catch them on dries or nymphs—all season long.

Nervous Waters is proud to announce the ongoing partnership between RIO products and Chime Lodge for 2014. RIO has been a key innovator in the sport, producing the industry's leading fly lines for freshwater, salt, and spey applications for more than 20 years. Thanks to the collaboration, clients will have the opportunity to fish the best fly lines in the business engineered for ultimate performance across a wide spectrum of fishing scenarios.

To sum up, we look forward to a fantastic season. We’re also excited about Simon Gawesworth’s hosted trip at Chime Lodge. If you want to learn to cast like a pro—from a pro—you need to sign up soon. After a week with Simon, jovial host, amazing fly caster and fly fisherman,  you'd have to get in your car to get farther away from your fly.
Dates are March 16 to 23. Don’t miss it!

Tight Lines,

Kurt Treichel
Chime Lodge Manager

GREEN LIGHT FOR DORADO!

Alto Paraná

The first season at our latest Nervous Waters addition recently started and we’re happy to report that operations are going great. Prior to the opening, everything looked promising for the Upper Parana section. Prior to the closed season, dorado and pira pita fishing was remarkable. And a number of pacu had been caught by local fisherman. By late December, when the season reopened, we were blessed with higher water temps and active fish. According to local reports, large schools of dorado had been spotted throughout the region. Pira pita have been active for more than a month, so at this stage, they are already willing to take flies. As you know, this kind of fishing is addictive, so beware. Leading up to the seasonal close, we witnessed groups of this unique species cruising island shorelines and surface-sipping flowers that had fallen from trees. An extremely delicate and subtle scene, so we got down to work and started tying some flower imitations.

Now that the season is already in full swing, we are happy to say that this first season has started even better than expected. All clients left for home overwhelmed with the place and the varied fishing experience.

As for dorado, we’ve seen several schools chasing sabalos near large mid-river sandbars. This phenomenon equates to some exciting, technical fishing. If conditions persist, we’re expecting great sight-fishing opportunities for some big league fish.

Pirá Lodge

Pirá Lodge opened the season a bit later than Alto Paraná. However, we've already had some groups hooking their first dorado. The water conditions are as good as we could expect for this time of the year.

In order to give our anglers a better understanding of the current situation, let's go back to the early season: water levels had been ideal at Pira Lodge.  By late November they had risen significantly making fishing difficult but fortunately, the dorado population in the system was already the biggest—in both numbers and size— that we had witnessed in years. These high water events are also a boom for habitat, benefitting the whole ecosystem. Both the marsh and the Corriente River are about as healthy as they can get. Water is crystal clear in every beat. And as the rain begins to subside the seasonal outlook is great. Water typically starts dropping in January, February, and March, allowing fish to congregate in side and main channels. When this occurs, we’re expecting one of the best seasons on record, as well as a solid foundation for 2015.
