Mayazul Lodge – A Record Week in Ascension Bay
The first week of September will be remembered as one of the most remarkable since Mayazul Lodge opened its doors in 2024. Eight friends, traveling from different corners of the globe, came together with a single goal: to pursue the permit of Ascension Bay.
Permit are often described as the ultimate prize in saltwater fly fishing. Sharp-eyed, unpredictable, and famously selective, they have earned the reputation of being the fish of a thousand casts. For most anglers, landing just one can define an entire trip.
This week, however, was different. Early fall brought stable weather, with clear skies, calm winds, and exceptional visibility across the flats. Fishing coincided with a full moon—a condition often seen as a challenge—but in this case, it seemed to fuel the activity inside the bay.
Every day delivered encounters: solitary fish crossing sandy stretches, pairs moving along the mangroves, and large schools feeding across the flats. By the end of the week, the group had landed 73 permit, from fast-moving juveniles to powerful adults tipping the scales at more than 25 pounds. It marked the most successful week of permit fishing in Mayazul’s young history.
Yet beyond the numbers, what defined the experience were the shared moments—the collective cheers each time a fish came to hand, the laughter echoing over dinner, and the bonds forged on and off the water.
At Mayazul Lodge, world-class permit fishing meets a spirit of friendship and connection. This week not only set a milestone but also reaffirmed why Ascension Bay remains one of the premier permit destinations in the world.
