We wrapped up our second week at Villa María Lodge with the river settling into the kind of shape anglers hope for this time of year.
After the high water that marked the season’s start, the Río Grande continued its steady drop. Clarity improved day by day, and by week’s end we were fishing under truly ideal conditions — healthy levels, clean water, and classic summer structure throughout the beats.
Weather remained mostly cooperative. Mild temperatures and manageable winds allowed for long, comfortable sessions. A few isolated storms passed through during the week, but none disrupted fishing or significantly altered river conditions.
As the river improved, so did the results.
Catch rates climbed steadily, and the average size of fish was impressive. As expected in early January, the trout were exceptionally fresh — chrome-bright, powerful, and in outstanding condition straight from the sea.
Tactics evolved with daily conditions. During low-light sessions, large intruder-style patterns proved highly effective, especially when swung through deeper buckets toward dusk. On calmer, sunnier stretches with lighter wind, downsizing paid off. Smaller flies presented on longer leaders produced confident takes and rewarded precise presentations.
Adaptability once again made the difference.
A special highlight of the week belonged to Arthur, on his first visit to Villa María Lodge. Over the course of his stay, he landed fish of 17, 19, and a remarkable 22 pounds — an unforgettable introduction to the Río Grande. Some call it Irish luck… and it certainly seemed to be on his side.
Looking ahead, we are monitoring a few isolated storm systems that moved through late in the week. If levels remain stable, we expect the river to continue in excellent shape and set the stage for another strong week ahead.
