Week two at Villa María Lodge marked a clear turning point in river conditions.
After the unsettled start to the season, the Río Grande continued its steady drop, and clarity improved day after day. By the final sessions of the week, we were fishing under classic summer conditions — healthy water levels, clean flows, and well-defined structure throughout the lower river.
Weather remained mostly cooperative. Mild temperatures and manageable winds allowed for long, focused days on the water. A few isolated storms passed through, but none were significant enough to disrupt the rhythm of the week.
As the river settled, so did the fishing.
Early January continues to bring exceptionally fresh sea-run trout — chrome-bright, powerful, and in outstanding condition straight from the ocean. Reading the water carefully and presenting with precision proved increasingly important as clarity improved.
Tactically, adaptability remained essential. During low-light periods, large intruder-style patterns triggered aggressive reactions in deeper buckets. In calmer, sunnier windows with lighter wind, smaller flies presented on longer leaders delivered consistent opportunities. Subtle adjustments in swing speed, depth, and angle made the difference.
The highlight of the week belonged to Arthur, visiting Villa María Lodge for the first time. He connected with a magnificent 22-pound trout — an unforgettable introduction to the Río Grande and a well-earned reward for disciplined water coverage.
Looking ahead, we are monitoring the isolated storm systems that moved through late in the week. If levels remain stable, conditions should continue trending positively as we move deeper into the heart of the season.
