Best Fly Fishing in Mexico

Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula is home to some of the most exciting saltwater fly fishing in the Caribbean, with two legendary fisheries at the center of the experience: Ascension Bay and Bahía Espíritu Santo. From Punta Allen to Punta Herrero, these protected waters offer anglers exceptional opportunities for permit, bonefish, tarpon, and snook in a setting defined by turquoise flats, mangrove lagoons, turtle grass, white sand, and wild Caribbean coastline.

At Mayazul Lodge, anglers fish the waters of Ascension Bay from Punta Allen, one of Mexico’s classic flats fishing destinations and a long-established favorite among permit anglers. Located within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, this quiet fishing village offers a true escape from mainstream tourism, with direct access to a rich and diverse fishery where permit take center stage, while bonefish, tarpon, and snook add variety throughout the season.

Farther south, near Punta Herrero, ESB Lodge and Beh Kay Lodge open the door to Bahía Espíritu Santo, one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated permit and Grand Slam fisheries. Both lodges fish the same vast bay, a remote and protected system of flats, lagoons, channels, mangroves, and backcountry water where anglers can encounter permit, bonefish, tarpon, and snook in close proximity. While ESB Lodge is known for its diversity, consistency, and Grand Slam potential, Beh Kay Lodge offers a more focused permit-driven program from an intimate beachfront setting.

Together, Mayazul Lodge, ESB Lodge, and Beh Kay Lodge give Nervous Waters anglers three distinct lodge experiences across two of Mexico’s finest saltwater fisheries.

More about Fly Fishing in Mexico

Seasoned anglers seeking the pinnacle of permit fishing look to Mexico’s Caribbean coast, where Ascension Bay and Bahía Espíritu Santo have earned their place among the most respected flats fisheries in the world. Here, the pursuit of permit takes center stage, drawing anglers to clear coastal flats, turtle grass meadows, mangrove edges, lagoons, and channels where every shot demands patience, accuracy, and composure.

Permit, famed for their speed, intelligence, and unforgiving nature, remain the ultimate prize. From tailing fish in skinny water to cruising singles and schools moving across the bay, each encounter delivers the kind of tension and excitement that defines saltwater fly fishing.

But Mexico offers much more than permit alone. Across our programs, anglers can target bonefish, tarpon, snook, barracuda, jacks, snapper, and other tropical species, with real Grand Slam opportunities depending on season, conditions, and water movement.

Off the water, each lodge brings its own character: Mayazul’s relaxed beachfront charm in Punta Allen, ESB’s remote palapa-style lodge experience on Bahía Espíritu Santo, and Beh Kay’s intimate geodesic dome concept near Punta Herrero. Fresh local cuisine, open bars, comfortable accommodations, fly-tying areas, and experienced local guides complete the experience.

Whether fishing Ascension Bay from Punta Allen or Bahía Espíritu Santo from Punta Herrero, Nervous Waters’ Mexico programs combine technical flats fishing, authentic hospitality, and daily encounters with some of the Caribbean’s most coveted gamefish.

At each lodge, our commitment is the same

We work tirelessly before, during, and after the season to offer our fishing guests an authentic and rewarding experience. We pay attention to the smallest details—from being on time every time, to the quality of our wines, to the type of vehicles & boats we choose. Our Mexican fly-fishing lodges host only a limited number of guests each week, again ensuring great service and plenty of “elbowroom” in the lodge and on the river.

US citizens, Canadians, and UK passengers do not require a visa for travel to Mexico. However, you will need a valid passport with at least 2 blank pages and a copy of your return ticket upon entry. Please note that if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever, the Mexican government may require proof of Yellow Fever Vaccination as a precautionary measure.

Travel logistics vary depending on the lodge, but all Nervous Waters Mexico programs are accessed through Cancún International Airport (CUN).

For Mayazul Lodge in Punta Allen, guests may fly into Cancún (CUN) or Tulum (TQO). When booking commercial flights, we recommend arriving no later than 2:00 PM and departing no earlier than 1:00 PM to allow enough time for the ground-and-water transfer to and from the lodge.

For ESB Lodge and Beh Kay Lodge in Punta Herrero, guests should fly into Cancún (CUN) International Airport and plan to overnight near the airport before traveling to the lodge the following morning. The Courtyard Marriott Cancún Airport is the recommended hotel due to its proximity, shuttle service, restaurant, and convenience.

The next morning, guests are transferred from the Courtyard Marriott to Cancún’s private aviation terminal for a scenic charter flight south along the Caribbean coastline into the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. The flight takes approximately one hour and lands at the remote airstrip, followed by a ground transfer through the reserve to the lodge.

On departure day, guests return by ground transfer to the airstrip for the charter flight back to Cancún’s private aviation terminal, where transportation will be waiting for the short transfer to Cancún International Airport. For ESB Lodge and Beh Kay Lodge, we recommend booking return flights no earlier than 2:00 PM.

Our team will provide the final transfer schedule and lodge-specific details before your trip.
