Kautapen Lodge – Week 11: March 16th to 23rd, 2024

In the opening moments of the week, our lodge warmly welcomed a group of Scottish anglers, setting the stage for an exciting and eagerly anticipated week ahead. As friendships were rekindled and new connections forged, anticipation mounted for what promised to be an unforgettable series of fishing adventures.

Last week, anglers encountered notable shifts in both water and weather conditions. Nights began with bitter cold, dropping to as low as -4°C, resulting in frozen ground each morning. However, daytime temperatures ranged from a relatively mild 6 to 8°C, accompanied by calm winds. As the week progressed, temperatures gradually rose, particularly in the latter half, coinciding with a rapid decrease in water levels across both rivers, which remained clear throughout the week. These changing conditions introduced fresh challenges and opportunities, injecting excitement into each angler’s expedition.

Fishing conditions were exceptional last week, with anglers enjoying prolific success. Throughout the week, well over 100 fish were hooked, ranging from super fresh specimens to those that had inhabited the river for the entire season. This abundance of bites and varied catch provided anglers with a thrilling and rewarding angling experience, showcasing the richness and diversity of the river’s fish population.

Notable catches from last week’s fishing adventures included Ian’s remarkable feat, landing a massive 25-pound male in his deepest river colors. Simon followed closely with three 18-pounders, while Hugh added to the excitement with a 20-pounder. Victoria, new to fly fishing, celebrated her maiden catch and continued to hook several more. Additionally, the Río Grande and the Menendez also yielded numerous mid-teen fish, contributing to the overall excitement and abundance of angling experiences throughout the week.
