The Marls of Abaco are immense. Stretching across more than 240 square miles, this labyrinth of shallow flats is so vast that thirteen Manhattans could fit within its borders. But instead of traffic and towers, anglers find a quiet wilderness of pale sand flats, mangrove cays, and scattered islands of Bahamian pine. It is a landscape shaped by tides and light—an ideal environment for one of the most prolific bonefish populations in the Caribbean.
From Abaco Lodge’s central location, our guides have access to an extraordinary range of water. The Marls we fish extend from Wood Cay in the south to the western flats off Treasure Cay, and northward toward the broad shallows near Coopers Town. A thirty-minute skiff run due west brings anglers to the ocean-facing edge of the Marls, where deeper channels, moving tides, and expansive flats often concentrate larger fish.
Bonefish here commonly average three to four pounds, though the Marls are well known for producing larger fish in the five- to ten-pound class. These bigger fish appear less frequently, but when they slide across a flat in good light, the encounter is unforgettable.
While bonefish dominate the ecosystem thanks to the Marls’ protected habitat and abundant forage, the system offers exciting variety. Permit and juvenile tarpon opportunities occur regularly enough that anglers should come prepared with tackle for both species. Barracuda and several shark species also inhabit these waters, adding another dimension to a day on the flats.
Fishing is conducted from our meticulously maintained Maverick flats skiffs, purpose-built for technical sight fishing and comfort. For anglers who enjoy stalking fish on foot, wading opportunities are also available in select areas.
Runs from the lodge dock to the flats typically range from 10 to 45 minutes, depending on tides and destination. Each skiff is equipped for both performance and comfort, with padded seats, backrests, line-tamer mats, and bow lean bars for stable casting. Guides also carry onboard first-aid kits and an emergency satellite phone, ensuring anglers can explore this vast and beautiful fishery with complete confidence.
In addition to its remarkable flats fishing, Abaco also offers exceptional bluewater opportunities. For anglers interested in offshore action, the lodge can coordinate one or more days with some of the island’s most experienced captains. Depending on the season, target species may include marlin, sailfish, dorado, wahoo, and tuna. These trips can be arranged through the lodge, though the island’s best captains often book well in advance, and we recommend planning accordingly. Please note that bluewater charters are available at an additional cost.
