Mayazul Lodge – Season Kickoff Fishing Report 2024

We are delighted to have wrapped up the inaugural month of operations at Mayazul Lodge!

Our intimate, beachfront lodge is located right on the Mayan Riviera, close to Punta Allen. It features just four rooms (accommodating up to 8 anglers), each offering two queen beds. Our attractive lounging and dining areas provide stunning views of the flats you and your guide will pole, searching for tailing fish and new adventures.

April & early May brought some unique challenges to Ascension Bay, with southeast winds that really tested our guides’ skills. Despite the weather, we’re thrilled to report a ton of catches, especially our tent-pole species, the Permit.

This month, our guests—ranging from seasoned anglers to total beginners—have had plenty of chances to chase the coveted permit. Since we opened in early April, we’ve caught more than 25 permit between 2 and 20 pounds in various situations.

We’ve also been excited to encounter migratory tarpon, ranging from 60 to 120 pounds, which added a thrilling twist to our fishing adventures. This tarpon migration is a relatively new phenomenon, offering exciting opportunities.

The abundance of bonefish has also been a highlight. These fast, elusive fish are perfect for beginners, who can also take advantage of casting classes with our knowledgeable guides. Bonefish are everywhere, from the quietest spots in the bay to our home pool, just meters from the lodge.

We’ve even achieved the esteemed Saltwater Grand Slam—catching permit, tarpon, and bonefish—more than once, marking a successful first month.

We expect milder winds in the coming months, which should make for even better fishing experiences and more opportunities to engage with the tarpon migration. We’re excited to continue our journey at Mayazul Lodge, where every day brings new adventures and unforgettable fishing moments.
