Kau Tapen Lodge – Week 8: February 22nd to March 1st, 2025

We’ve just wrapped up the eighth week of fishing on both the Rio Grande and Menendez rivers, hosting a group of international anglers from Europe and the US.

Water levels remained low across both rivers, which meant we had to take a delicate approach to ensure success during daylight hours. The weather was fairly average, with a couple of high-intensity wind days. While the winds didn’t affect the fishing directly, they did challenge our ability to cover the water properly, both in terms of casting and line control during the swing.

With the low water levels and the season progressing, the fish are settling into their holding spots and staying there, rather than continuing to run. This required us to adjust our strategy slightly, but we continued to fish all available water. Small nymphs in natural colors and long leaders were the dominant technique throughout the week.

Although the fishing was tougher than usual, we managed to land very nice seatrouts, ranging from 5 to 16 pounds. As always, the late hours of the day proved to be the most productive. The Menendez River continues to surprise us, leaving every guest eager to return for more.
